Description

The Laven family established the Miles Laven Memorial Jazz Scholarship to honor the late jazz musician and composer Miles Laven. Miles played drums in the EWHS Jazz Band and in various other ensembles during his high school years from 2009 to 2013 and went on to study at Manhattan School of Music.

Eligibility: The Miles Laven Memorial Jazz Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior vocalist or instrumentalist from Edmonds Woodway High School planning to attend a postsecondary institution to study music who has demonstrated leadership, creativity, and musical excellence in jazz.

Application Requirements: 

  • Applicants must provide two recommendations: one from their EWHS Jazz music teacher and one from another adult (i.e. teacher, counselor, private music teacher, pastor, etc.)

You will be asked to provide the following:

  • Applicant data

  • Financial Information pages on your college choices.

  • List and describe all school activities in which you have participated during the past 4 years (e.g., student government, music, sports, etc.)  Indicate all special awards, certificates, and honors earned. Please include information about your participation in a Jazz Ensemble.

  • List and describe all other community activities, not previously listed in the school activities in which you have participated without pay during the past 4 years. Indicate all special awards, certificates, and honors received.

  • List and describe your work experience during the past 4 years. Indicate dates of employment in each job, brief description of work experience and the approximate number of hours worked per month.  

  • Essay, maximum 500 words, explaining why you are applying for scholarships and how it will benefit your educational goals. Please see the essay section below for more information.

  • Describe how and when any unusual family or personal circumstances (including financial hardships) have affected your achievement in school, work experience, or your participation in school and community activities. 

  • Applicant appraisal, sent through the Survey Monkey Apply application portal to a school counsellor or academic advisor. Please see applicant appraisal section below for more information.

  • Two reference letters, less than one year old. At least one must come from an ESD faculty member. Please see the references section below for more information.

  • A copy of your transcript. Please see transcript section below for more information.

Essay

You will be asked to ATTACH an essay, in pdf format, (500 words maximum) expressing what in your life has led you to apply for this scholarship. In your essay, please include how a monetary award would help you achieve your educational goals. 

Applicant Appraisal

Through the Application Program, send an Applicant Appraisal form to a school counselor or academic adviser. The applicant appraisal form is a list of questions on which the appraiser rates you on a scale. The appraiser will also provide any comments on any special circumstances or financial situation you may have. This person will receive an email and instructions on how to send the completed form back through the automated system; you will not see the appraisal form. You will be notified by email when the person providing the Applicant Appraisal has completed the form. Once it is completed, you will be able to mark it as 'complete' in the application program.

Letters of Reference

Through the Application Program, you must include two letters of reference, each less than a year old. Please ensure to include one from a music teacher or director.

You must upload recommendations (PDFs only) that have been provided to you. If you have a physical copy of the appraisal, but not an electronic copy, you will need to create a PDF using a scanner or scanner app on a phone. Alternatively, you can ask the recommender who wrote your letter to email you a PDF file of the letter that you can upload through the system.

IMPORTANT!! Before submitting the applications, please confirm you have two Letters of Reference! 

It is your responsibility to be sure that you have two recommendations as part of your finished application.

Transcript

SUBMIT a current unofficial PDF format transcript of grades via the upload tool in the application. If it is two-sided, please be sure to capture all pages. The transcript should be complete and include your 1st semester grades of your senior year. 

  • EWHS Students: Fill out a request form found in the EW Counseling Office. Please return the request to the same office. The request should be for an Electronic Version in pdf file format to be emailed to the student's school email address. Allow 24 hours.

You are responsible to see that all documents are submitted correctly and accurately through the system. The Foundation will only process completed applications as of the application deadline. Completed applications and all required elements must be submitted on or before March 29, 2024.
